This stainless steel Reflex Hammer according to Berliner is used to induce muscle stretching reflexes, for example the Achilles tendon reflex and patellar tendon reflex, in the context of neurological examination.

The strength of a reflex is used to measure central and peripheral nervous system disorders , resulting in hyperreflexia, or exaggerated reflexes, and the latter resulting in hyporeflexia, or reduced reflexes.
